The Greatest Try

Signed Limited Edition Print

The Barbarians vs New Zealand, 1973. A Barbarians team studded with Welsh rugby greats, facing the formidable All Blacks. Remembered always as That Game. That Try. That Fellow Edwards. If there is a moment that encapsulates the wonder of rugby and transcends the sport itself, it is this.

When the magic moment came, there was no well-placed photographer to snap a close-up. Now, nearly 50 years on, artist Elin Siân Blake has finally captured that try in glorious detail. The Greatest Try has come alive again, as a limited-edition, signed work of rugby art.

Rugby’s Greatest Moment?

Almost five decades have passed since That Try, and it is still pure rugby magic. It’s a moment of rugby union history we can never forget. The iconic highlight that has been viewed over 6 million times on YouTube.

This is Gareth Edwards! A dramatic start! What a score! Oh that fellow Edwards! What can touch a man like that!

When Gareth Edwards dives over the line to score in the opening minutes of that match it is more than the Greatest Try. The score seals seven players in perfect synchronicity, sweeping across the field from the shadow of their own posts.

How the magic moment unfolded

A Never-Before-Seen View of The Greatest Try

The lucky few present on that overcast January day in 1973, and the many watching on TV at home, witnessed one of the greatest rugby tries of all time. But with just one camera catching the action, none could witness the magic unfold up close — either then or in the decades since.

Working closely with Gareth Edwards himself, artist Elin Siân Blake has reconstructed the scene, to finally capture the Barbarians rugby team’s most awe-inspiring moment in beautiful detail. It’s more than rugby wall art. It is sporting history, in glorious colour, from the memory of one of the key players.
